Llyn Llech Owain Country Park Lake Walk

Carmarthenshire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10An easy, well surfaced loop around a peat stained lake near Cross Hands, where dogs roam off lead in the woods, with a cafe at the visitor centre.

Llyn Llech Owain is a 73 hectare country park on the edge of Gorslas, run by Carmarthenshire County Council and centred on a shallow lake of about 3.5 hectares, with woodland tracks where a dog can go off lead away from the lake's boggy margins. The lake sits in a peat basin, which stains the water a deep brown, and the lake and its surrounding bog, heath and acid meadows are a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Its name means the lake of Owain's slab: local legend says Owain Lawgoch forgot to replace the stone over a well on Mynydd Mawr and the flood filled the hollow. This loop of about 4.5km follows surfaced paths and boardwalks around the lake and bog, then takes the forest track through conifer and broadleaved woodland for the longer circuit. It is almost flat, on gravel paths.

This is a relaxed dog friendly walk with good off-lead potential on the woodland tracks, away from the busy area by the visitor centre and play parks, where dogs are not allowed in the adventure play areas. The lake and bog are a protected habitat, so keep your dog on the paths and boardwalks rather than letting them wade into the peat. There is plenty of shade in the woods, and the level surfaces suit older dogs and short legs. Bins are placed around the park. The pay and display car park is off Church Road, and Caffi Owain and toilets are at the visitor centre next to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Llyn Llech Owain Country Park Lake Walk dog friendly?

Llyn Llech Owain scores 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness, making it a solid choice for a day out with your dog. The 4.5km loop offers well-surfaced, mostly flat paths that suit dogs of all ages and sizes, and there's good off-lead potential in the woodland sections. Just be aware that dogs aren't permitted in the adventure play areas near the visitor centre.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Llyn Llech Owain Country Park Lake Walk?

Yes, the woodland tracks away from the visitor centre and play areas offer good off-lead freedom. The forest section of the loop — through a mix of conifer and broadleaved woodland — is where dogs can roam most comfortably. Keep them on lead or close by near the lake and bog margins, which are a protected SSSI habitat.

  • What should I know before visiting Llyn Llech Owain Country Park Lake Walk with my dog?

The lake and surrounding bog, heath and acid meadows are a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so it's important to keep your dog on the paths and boardwalks and out of the peat — the water looks tempting but the margins are boggy and the habitat is sensitive. The paths are surfaced and almost entirely flat, which makes the walk well suited to older dogs or those with shorter legs, and there's plenty of woodland shade on warmer days. Poo bins are dotted around the park, parking is pay and display off Church Road, and Caffi Owain at the visitor centre is handy for a post-walk coffee.
