Carreg Cennen Castle Circular Walk
Carmarthenshire
Carreg Cennen Castle sits on a limestone crag about 90 metres above the Cennen valley near Trapp on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons. Two signposted circular walks, both lead walks for dogs given the grazing stock, start from the farm car park below it, and this is the longer, about 6km with roughly 200 metres of climbing. It drops through oak and ash woodland to the River Cennen, then climbs rough tracks and quiet lanes past a ruined lime kiln, the old rabbit warrens known as Beddau'r Derwyddon and Llygad Llwchwr, the cave where the River Loughor emerges, with long views back to the castle. It is steep in places and muddy in wet months.
This is a dog friendly walk only in the sense that responsible owners are welcome: the farm asks for dogs to be on a lead at all times, because the whole route crosses grazed farmland with sheep and cattle, and ponies can be met on the higher ground. The owners warn that worried stock have run off the 300 foot cliff below the castle, so keep your dog close near the crag. The woods beneath the castle are known for adders, so keep dogs on the path in warm weather. The River Cennen gives your dog a drink, and some stiles are awkward for bigger dogs. The tea room is guide dogs only, and there are bins only in the car park.

Is Carreg Cennen Castle Circular Walk dog friendly?
Dogs are welcome on this walk, though it comes with a fair few conditions, which is reflected in its 6/10 rating. The entire route crosses working farmland with sheep, cattle, and ponies, so the farm asks that dogs are kept on a lead throughout. The tea room at Carreg Cennen Farm is guide dogs only, and poo bins are available in the car park but not on the route itself.
Can dogs be off lead at Carreg Cennen Castle Circular Walk?
No — this is a lead-only walk for the full 6km. The route crosses grazed farmland throughout, and the farm is clear that dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. This is particularly important near the castle crag, where the owners warn that worried stock have previously run off the 300-foot cliff below.
What should I know before visiting Carreg Cennen Castle Circular Walk with my dog?
A few things worth bearing in mind: the woods beneath the castle are known adder habitat, so keep dogs on the path during warm weather. Some stiles along the route can be awkward for larger dogs, and the terrain is steep in places and muddy in wet months. On the plus side, the River Cennen offers a natural drinking stop, and the views back to one of Wales' most spectacular castles make it well worth the effort.
