Dinefwr Park and Castle Wildlife Walk
Carmarthenshire
Dinefwr is an 800 acre National Trust estate on the edge of Llandeilo, where dogs stay on a lead because livestock graze the historic parkland, which is both a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Some of its veteran oaks are thought to be more than 700 years old, and they carry such a range of lichens and insects that they are the reason for the designations. The waymarked wildlife walk is a 3 mile (4.8km) circuit from the main car park. It crosses a cattle grid onto the stone track, follows the heron waymarks of the River Walk down past Mynachdy, an old red brick gamekeeper's cottage, and takes in the ruined 12th century Dinefwr Castle on its hilltop above the Tywi valley and the 17th century Newton House. The ground is mostly level but the grassland gets muddy when wet.
This is a dog friendly estate, rated three paw prints by the National Trust, but it is a lead walk from start to finish. The Trust asks for dogs to be on a short lead at all times to protect the livestock that graze the parkland, and dogs are not allowed on the boardwalk or in the enclosed Deer Park, where the fallow deer herd lives. In return your dog is welcome in the cafe and on the ground floor and basement of Newton House. Carry water on warm days. Toilets are in the main car park, and admission applies to non members.
