1 / 16Maesydderwen Holiday Cottages - Owl Cottage
Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire
A single storey cottage for four near Llandeilo in the Brecon Beacons, with an enclosed lawned garden, a private hot tub, 25 acres of shared woodland grounds and two dogs welcome.
Maesydderwen means oak field, and the old farm that later became a country inn outside Llandeilo is now a small group of cottages run by owners who live on site. Owl Cottage is one of them: dog friendly, all on one floor, sleeping four, with two dogs welcome, an enclosed lawn of its own and a private hot tub.
The garden is lawned and enclosed, with a patio, a barbecue and furniture, and it is the one place the dogs can be off the lead. Beyond it are 25 acres of natural woodland grounds shared with the owners and the other cottages, and these hold an unfenced pond, a stream, sloping banks, wetland and a disused quarry. Dogs are to be kept on leads everywhere outside the enclosed garden, and a lead walk through the oaks is still a fine way to start the day.
Inside, patio doors open from the living room onto the garden. There is an electric wood burner, a kitchen and dining area in the same open space, a double bedroom and a bunk room, so two adults, two children and two dogs fit without fuss. The owners leave a welcome pack and doggy extras. The hot tub is the evening's business: dogs fed and settled, and the woodpeckers, nuthatches and red kites of the day giving way to the dark.
Llandeilo is a small market town with good independent shops and cafes, and the castles of Dinefwr and Carreg Cennen, the second perched on a limestone crag, are close by. Further east, the Black Mountain and the glacial lake of Llyn y Fan Fach give a dog a proper mountain day.
