Charlotte Cottage is a Georgian house in a quiet pocket of Keswick with sash windows, shutters and an AGA in the kitchen, dog friendly for four with two dogs allowed. That kitchen opens onto an enclosed patio garden, which is the whole arrangement in a sentence: cook with the door propped and let the dogs come and go as they see fit.
The lounge holds the wood burner and a shelf of toys, games and books, so the cottage plainly expects children alongside the dogs. Upstairs the king faces front with the Whinlatter fells over the rooftops, while the bunk room looks the other way across the garden to the church. They share a tiled bathroom. The middle of town is half a mile off, with an Art Deco cinema, the pencil museum and plenty to eat. Derwentwater opens beyond it and the path right round the lake makes a full day of roughly 8 miles, with a boat back across the water if the dogs give out before the people do. Whinlatter's forest trails and the fells above the town take up the rest of the week.
