A gate in the garden railings opens into a paddock. That is the whole arrangement and it is a good one: the garden is enclosed for the hour a dog needs to be safe in it, and the paddock is there for the hour it needs to run. Cow House sleeps eight at Cardington in the Shropshire hills, dog friendly and five star, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and two dogs allowed. The barn was designed with access in mind and it shows in the fabric rather than in a list: level throughout, and a wet room laid out for a wheelchair. The underfloor heating runs off a biomass boiler and a burner takes the lounge. The porch deals with the boots before they get anywhere. It suits a party in which not everybody walks the same distance. Cardington is half a mile off, stone and timber with a church standing since the twelfth century, and the hills begin immediately behind the village. Two dogs get the paddock morning and evening and a hill in the middle, and nobody gets left at the gate.
Behind the village Caer Caradoc rises straight out of the fields, a steep cone with an Iron Age fort round the top and ramparts you can still walk the line of. The Lawley runs parallel to it, narrower and just as abrupt, and the two together make a ridge walk with a drop off both sides. Two dogs get open hill with no road crossed to reach any of it.
