Dawn's House

Cromford, Derbyshire

A three bedroom cottage for six at Cromford near Matlock with an enclosed garden on three levels, a hot tub and three dogs welcome.

Book now

The garden goes down the hill in three separate levels with steps between each of them. Dawn's House takes six at Cromford, dog friendly, five star, three bedrooms against one bathroom, with a hot tub outside and water in the view. Three dogs are welcome. Those steps are worth knowing about beforehand, because they are exactly what an old animal does not want to meet.

For a dog with working legs the levels are the whole appeal instead: three enclosed terraces stacked one above another, each of them out of sight of the last, which is a good deal more interesting to an animal than a single flat lawn will ever be. Three dogs will use all of it and know which terrace the sun has reached at any hour of the day.

Cromford is a mill village that became a World Heritage Site without anybody having to move out of it. The cottages were put up for the workforce and are lived in yet, the water still runs in the channels cut to feed the wheels, and the hot tub at the top of the garden looks out over the lot. Three dogs get the terraces, the games indoors and whichever bed they reach first.

Cromford Mill stands at the bottom of the hill, the first place anywhere to spin cotton by water power, built by Richard Arkwright in 1771 and the reason this valley carries its listing at all. The wharf and the water sit a few minutes further on. Three dogs get a village whose walking begins at the door, with the history standing round it as scenery.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Dawn's House dog friendly?

Yes, Dawn's House welcomes up to three dogs. The enclosed garden is split across three separate terraced levels, giving dogs plenty of space to explore, and they're also welcome on the furniture indoors — whichever bed they reach first, apparently.

  • Are dogs allowed at Dawn's House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the host directly to confirm availability for your dates. With an enclosed garden and a hot tub, it's the kind of place that works well across the seasons.

  • What should I know before visiting Dawn's House with my dog?

The garden is fully enclosed, which is great for dogs, but it's arranged on three levels connected by steps — something worth bearing in mind if your dog struggles with stairs or has mobility issues. The village of Cromford is also very walkable straight from the door, with the historic mill, wharf and waterways all within easy reach on foot.
