Two dogs come in through the patio doors carrying half of Filey Bay and go straight to the water bowl. Fileys Retreat is a dog friendly cottage for six at Hunmanby, a single storey house on a quiet village street with its garden enclosed at the back, and the sand is near enough that this happens twice a day.

The middle of the house is one long room, sofas at one end and the kitchen at the other with the dining table and the patio doors between them, so the garden is never more than a few paces from wherever the dogs have chosen to lie. Three bedrooms lead off it and the king has a bathroom of its own. Outside is lawn, a patio, garden furniture and a BBQ, with a fence round the lot of it.

Families who want the coast without living on the seafront will get on with this one. Hunmanby is a village a couple of miles inland, quiet enough that a dog stops reacting to the street by the second day, and every beach on this stretch is a few minutes by car. With the whole house at ground level the sand comes as far as the door and no further, which after a fortnight of school holidays is not a small thing.

Filey is minutes east, a wide bay of firm sand backed by a Victorian seafront, with Filey Brigg reaching out at the north end where the Cleveland Way comes down off the moors. Reighton Sands and Speeton run south under clay cliffs and stay quieter. Cayton Bay north of the town has the surf school. Dogs are welcome on the greater part of all of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Fileys Retreat dog friendly?

Yes, Fileys Retreat is dog friendly and welcomes up to two dogs. The single storey layout means no stairs to navigate, and the enclosed lawned garden at the back of the house gives dogs a secure space to roam freely.

  • Are dogs allowed at Fileys Retreat year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs staying at Fileys Retreat, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. What we do know is that the nearby beaches — including Filey, Reighton Sands, Speeton, and Cayton Bay — welcome dogs on the greater part of their sands, which is great news whatever time of year you visit.

  • What should I know before visiting Fileys Retreat with my dog?

The cottage is single storey throughout, so there are no stairs between rooms, and dogs can come and go to the garden through the patio doors — handy after a sandy beach trip. Hunmanby is a quiet village a couple of miles inland, and the description notes that dogs tend to settle in quickly once they've had a day or two to adjust to the street. Filey and several other beaches are just a short drive away, so you'll have plenty of options for daily walks.
