1 / 16Gamekeepers Lodge
Port of Menteith, Stirling
A hand-built larch lodge for two and one dog above the Lake of Menteith in the Trossachs, with an enclosed garden, a four poster, a wood burner and a view over Inchmahome Priory.
The owners built Gamekeepers Lodge themselves, from Siberian larch outside and oak within, down to the kitchen. It stands on a hillside at Port of Menteith in the Trossachs, a dog friendly lodge for two with a single dog welcome, and it looks straight out across the Lake of Menteith to the island priory of Inchmahome and on to the Campsie Hills.
There are no stairs. One open plan room holds a wood burner and French doors onto a deck, the bed is a king size four poster, and the shower room is close to a wet room. Outside, the lodge has its own enclosed garden with a gas barbecue and furniture, placed for the view, and one guest's dog spent a good part of the week there playing with Bertie, the owners' golden retriever.
A few things about the grounds for anyone with a dog. There is a small pond right beside the lodge and a duck flighting pond elsewhere on the land, both drawing birds, so a dog that chases ducks needs keeping close outside the garden. The hillside above has cup and ring markings in the rock from prehistoric settlement, and osprey, red kites, red squirrels and pine martens all live around here.
From the door you can walk straight up into the Menteith Hills and join the Rob Roy Way, with miles of forest track beyond. Aberfoyle, Callander and the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park are ten minutes away, with Loch Ard's forest trails and Ben A'an for a bigger walk with a dog, and Stirling Castle is twenty minutes off.

Book with cottages.comFrequently Asked Questions
Is Gamekeepers Lodge dog friendly?
Yes, Gamekeepers Lodge welcomes one dog. The lodge has its own enclosed garden where your dog can roam safely, and one previous guest's dog spent much of the week out there playing with Bertie, the owners' golden retriever. From the door you can also walk straight up into the Menteith Hills, so there's no shortage of exercise on the doorstep.
Are dogs allowed at Gamekeepers Lodge year round?
The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability and any conditions for your dates. Given the lodge is a bespoke, owner-built retreat, they're well placed to advise on what works best for guests with dogs across different times of year.
What should I know before visiting Gamekeepers Lodge with my dog?
There are a couple of things to be aware of in the grounds: a small pond sits right beside the lodge and there's a duck flighting pond elsewhere on the land, both of which attract birds, so a dog with a tendency to chase ducks will need to be kept close outside the enclosed garden. The garden itself is a safe haven, and beyond it the surrounding area is rich with wildlife including osprey, red kites, red squirrels and pine martens, which adds to the magic but is worth keeping in mind if your dog is easily distracted.
