Ben A’an, Trossachs

Stirling

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A short but rewarding mountain experience with excellent off-lead potential on the open summit; the steep ascent demands fitness but most dogs complete it enthusiastically.

Ben A'an earns its reputation as a mountain in miniature. This compact 4 km walk from the car park on the A821 climbs 340 m through native oak and birch woodland before breaking onto exposed rocky terrain where the views suddenly open across Loch Katrine and the surrounding Trossachs. The path is steep but short, and the underlying Dalradian schist creates dramatic rock formations at the summit that give genuine altitude-feel despite the modest height. On clear days the panorama stretches to Ben Lomond and beyond, and the sense of achievement relative to the effort is remarkable.

This is a dog friendly walk that delivers a proper mountain experience in a fraction of the usual distance. The steep ascent demands reasonable fitness but most dogs complete it with enthusiasm, and the open summit area provides excellent off-lead space with low livestock risk. The narrow woodland path on the ascent requires closer control, and the rocky summit has some exposed edges where dogs should be kept nearby. Streams in the lower woodland provide water access on the climb. The car park is well equipped and Trossachs Pier nearby offers post-walk refreshments. Best suited to dogs comfortable with steep, rough ground and some scrambling on the upper sections.
