Pentrefoelas, Conwy
A Grade II listed 17th century manor house with a 1623 gatehouse near Pentrefoelas, sleeping ten on 500 acres of working sheep farm, with an enclosed walled garden and two dogs welcome.
Gilar House is a Grade II listed Welsh manor of the 17th century, part Tudor and part Elizabethan, set in 500 acres of mountainous farmland near Pentrefoelas. The Times put it among its 50 Coolest Holiday Cottages, and this dog friendly manor sleeps ten and welcomes two dogs, with heated dog kennels outside, a covered bike store and an outside tap.
Perch on the oak seat in the porch to pull off your boots, then step into an oak panelled hallway. Plaster armorial shields, feature fireplaces, exposed beams, stone and wooden floors and the original beam door lock from the 1600s give the house its character. Dogs keep to the ground floor, in the hard floored areas such as the slate flagged hall. Off it are a lounge with an impressive stone fireplace, a bespoke kitchen, and a dining room with a refectory table by the huge open fireplace.
Bedrooms upstairs have antique furniture, historic tapestries and oak panelling, and the master has a gigantic four poster under a fine late 16th century ceiling. A fifth bedroom sits along the cobbled garden path in the 1623 gatehouse, one of the last remaining in Wales, with oak window seats and a feature fireplace. The enclosed walled garden, reached from the porch, has a covered BBQ area, a fire pit and a lawn, and the dogs settle out there while supper cooks under cover.
Ancient woodlands, lakes and Garn Prys Mountain lie across the working sheep farm, so the walking starts on the farm itself for you and the dogs. Close by is Betws-y-Coed, gateway to Snowdonia National Park, with waterfalls, river pools and hilltop lakes to find, and Bala Lake and Bodnant Gardens are within reach.

Is Gilar House dog friendly?
Yes, Gilar House is a five star dog-friendly property that welcomes up to two dogs. It's a working sheep farm with 500 acres to explore, ancient woodland, hill lakes and pasture, plus an enclosed walled garden that gives dogs a secure space when gates are open elsewhere.
Are dogs allowed at Gilar House year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to confirm directly with the property when booking. Given that Gilar House is a working farm, it's worth checking whether any particular times of year come with additional guidance around livestock.
What should I know before visiting Gilar House with my dog?
The most important thing to understand is that Gilar House is first and foremost a working sheep farm, and that shapes everything about how you manage your dog on the property. The walled garden provides a safe enclosed space, but the wider 500 acres of farmland means dogs will need to be kept under close control around livestock. The steep, winding staircases inside are worth bearing in mind too — a dog who's happy to claim a spot by the large stone fireplace will probably have the right idea.
