Llyn Crafnant Circular
Conwy
Llyn Crafnant is a 63 acre mountain lake where the northern edge of Gwydir Forest meets the Carneddau, above Trefriw and within Eryri National Park. Because the shore is open access land, dogs need a lead by law from March to July, but outside that a dog with good recall can range on wide tracks away from the water. The circular walk is largely accessible, around 5km with 148 metres of climbing, on wide tracks, tarmac lanes and forest roads, with a few rougher sections near the water and several gates. About half a mile along the shore a bench marks a wild swimming spot, with a shingle beach and gradual entry, a legacy of the lake's time as a reservoir when swimming was banned. Two more benches look out over the mountain views.
This is a dog friendly walk and one of the more relaxed lake circuits in Gwydir Forest, with a lakeside cafe open Friday to Sunday through summer and toilets and a picnic area by the car park. Because the lake sits on open access land, dogs must be kept on a lead by law between 1 March and 31 July, when ground nesting birds are most vulnerable; outside that window, a dog with good recall can enjoy off-lead freedom on the wider tracks away from the shoreline. The wild swimming spot gives a dog the chance to paddle alongside you, and the forest and lakeside trees offer decent shade for most of the route. Livestock is not a feature here, and parking is free.

Is Llyn Crafnant Circular dog friendly?
Yes, this walk scores 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The lake circuit is gentle, mostly on wide tracks and lanes, with a wild swimming spot for a dog to paddle in and a lakeside cafe open on summer weekends. The one real constraint is a legal lead requirement on this open access land during the nesting season.
Can dogs be off lead at Llyn Crafnant Circular?
Outside the nesting season, a dog with good recall can have plenty of off-lead freedom on the wider tracks away from the water's edge, since there is little livestock here. Between 1 March and 31 July each year, dogs must be kept on a lead by law on this open access land to protect ground nesting birds.
What should I know before visiting Llyn Crafnant Circular with my dog?
The circuit covers around 5km with modest climbing, so allow about an hour and a half at a relaxed pace, plus time to stop at the wild swimming spot. Parking is free at the car park, which has toilets and a picnic area, and the lakeside cafe only opens Friday to Sunday through the summer months.
