Two dogs and four people fit well into The Stables, a converted barn at Hendy Farm near Raglan with exposed stone walls, a wood burner and underfloor heating across the ground floor, which a dog will find within minutes and never leave. It is a dog friendly cottage with two bedrooms, each with its own shower room.

Downstairs is one open space, living, dining and kitchen, with a utility room for the washer dryer and a separate cloakroom. Upstairs the two bedrooms are matched, both with zip and link super kings that can be split into twins, so two couples or a family share it without anyone drawing the short straw. A stairgate is provided if the dogs are better kept to the ground floor.

The garden is at the front and enclosed, laid to patio with a table and chairs and a rack for the bikes. It is where coffee happens first thing and the dogs have a sniff round before the day starts, and it is where the evening ends too, watching the light go over the fields. The skies here are dark enough for stars, and there is not much to hear but a dog snoring by the fire.

Raglan Castle, one of the best preserved in Wales, is just under 3 miles away. The Blorenge, the Skirrid and the Sugar Loaf rise on the edge of the Black Mountains within a short drive, and the Wye Valley is under half an hour off, a canoeing river with a path along its banks where a dog needs keeping close to the water's edge.
