Leys Cottage Lower Swell

Lower Swell, Gloucestershire

A two bedroom cottage for four at Lower Swell near Stow, with a bathroom for every bedroom, an enclosed garden behind the house and one dog welcome.

Lower Swell is a church, a lane and something under forty houses, a mile out of Stow and uninterested in being more than that. Leys Cottage stands on the street at its centre, five star, dog friendly, sleeping four in two king bedrooms with an enclosed garden at the back. The garden is what makes the address work: it puts the one dog on the booking behind the building rather than beside the road.

Three bathrooms for four people is more than the arithmetic asks for. Both bedrooms have their own, one with a roll top bath long enough to be worth running, and there is a shower room downstairs as well. A wood burner sits in the lounge. Two couples travelling with a single dog between them get a cottage where nothing has to be taken in turns.

It suits four people who came for the lanes rather than for a list of things to do. The village keeps to itself and a week here borrows that pace: out of the door, down the lane, the dog off ahead, and the rest of the day assembled from whatever turns up. Stow is close enough to be an errand, not an outing.

2 miles north at Upper Swell the lane drops to a mill pond with a brewery beside it, still family run, still using the same water it used in the 1860s, swans on it and a wheel turning under the building. The Dikler runs down from there through both Swells, a small river in a shallow fold of ground with field paths the length of it. One dog gets level going and a valley almost nobody walks.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Leys Cottage Lower Swell dog friendly?

Yes, Leys Cottage welcomes one dog. The enclosed garden at the back of the cottage is a real practical bonus — it keeps your dog safely behind the building rather than near the road, so they can have a run around without you worrying.

  • Are dogs allowed at Leys Cottage Lower Swell year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend checking directly with the property to confirm availability and any terms around your stay.

  • What should I know before visiting Leys Cottage Lower Swell with my dog?

The cottage accepts one dog per booking, so it's worth bearing that in mind when planning your trip. On the upside, the walking is excellent right from the door — the Dikler river runs through both Swells with field paths along its length, offering level, quiet going that's ideal for a dog. Stow-on-the-Wold is just a mile away if you need supplies, and the lanes around Lower Swell are peaceful enough to make the whole week feel pretty unhurried.
