A gate lets out of the far end of the garden onto a footpath. That arrangement changes a whole week: the dog goes out of the enclosed garden straight onto the High Weald without a lead or a car. Lidwells Coach House is a dog friendly conversion near Goudhurst carrying five stars, sleeping four across two bedrooms, two bathrooms, one dog welcome.

Inside it is the quiet sort of luxury rather than the noisy sort. Two bedrooms with a bathroom each, the sitting room holding a wood burner and its first logs, and the general sense of a building converted by somebody who intended to look at it afterwards. Beyond the far end of that enclosed garden, where the dog lives when it is not out on the path, there is access to the owners' swimming pool by arrangement through the summer.

Take a normal day. Out of the gate first thing with the dog before anybody else is up, back for a long breakfast, out again in the afternoon in a different direction, and the evening in front of the burner with an animal that has covered ten miles and has nothing further to contribute. Four people and one dog, and the dog is having the better holiday.

Goudhurst stands on a hill with the whole Weald spread below it, which is a rarer thing in Kent than the county's reputation for gentleness suggests. Scotney Castle sits in its moat a few miles south with a garden built round the ruin, and Bedgebury holds a national collection of conifers with waymarked trails through it, as good a place to walk a dog as this corner of the country has.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Lidwells Coach House dog friendly?

Yes, Lidwells Coach House welcomes one dog. The property has an enclosed garden where your dog can be outside safely, and a gate at the far end opens directly onto High Weald footpaths, so you can head out without a lead or a car.

  • Are dogs allowed at Lidwells Coach House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. What is noted as seasonal is access to the owners' swimming pool, which is available by arrangement through the summer months.

  • What should I know before visiting Lidwells Coach House with my dog?

The property accepts one dog, so it's not suited to multi-dog households.
