Lower Lodge is a characterful, architect designed cottage in the grounds of a working farm at Cwmcarvan near Monmouth, with acres of farm and woodland around it and mountain views beyond. Light filled and sleeping eight, it suits friends and families of several generations, and with two dogs welcome and footpaths from the front door, this dog friendly house makes getting outside easy.

An outside porch leads into a spacious hall with a stone tiled floor and a delightful bench, where boots come off and coats are hung before anyone reaches the kitchen. That kitchen and dining space is a large L shaped room with a wood burner, a table for eight and huge triple aspect windows onto the garden and woodland, with a shuttered hatch through to the lounge. The lounge has a second wood burner and two seating areas, and with three south facing windows it is very bright, so the dogs can choose between a fire and a sunny spot.

Downstairs, the biggest bedroom has two huge windows onto the garden and its own en suite, and three more bedrooms share the first floor with a bathroom whose bath has claw feet. The spacious enclosed garden keeps one table and chairs on the grass, another by the house, a charcoal barbecue and a chimenea, and the dogs can explore every corner of it. The woodland behind is home to deer, woodpeckers and owls.

Ancient woodland and footpaths begin at the door, and cyclists can join National Cycle Route 42. Monmouth, with its ancient bridge and independent shops, is the nearest market town, and Tintern Abbey, Raglan Castle, the Forest of Dean and the Black Mountains give two dogs a different landscape every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Lower Lodge dog friendly?

Yes, Lower Lodge welcomes up to two dogs. The house is clearly set up with them in mind — there's a stone-floored boot hall right at the entrance where coats, muddy boots and dogs can all be sorted out before anyone reaches the main living space, and the enclosed garden gives them somewhere safe to roam.

  • Are dogs allowed at Lower Lodge year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so there's nothing to suggest they're limited to certain times of year. If you want to confirm availability for specific dates, it's worth checking directly with the property.

  • What should I know before visiting Lower Lodge with my dog?

The house takes a maximum of two dogs, so bear that in mind if you're travelling with a bigger group. On the plus side, the setup is genuinely practical — a porch and stone-floored hall handle the post-walk cleanup, the garden is enclosed, and ancient woodland with footpaths starts right at the field edge. The Wye Valley path between Brockweir and Bigsweir is nearby too, a level riverside walk on soft ground that's well suited to dogs.
