Three bedrooms for a party of four, which is one more than the arithmetic needs and a good part of why people book it. Lower Mount Farm sits on the tops above Todmorden, a single storey bungalow whose dog friendly hall was built for coats, boots and drying a dog off, with one dog on the booking. The lawned garden at the side is enclosed and the patio at the front looks at open moor.

Living, cooking and eating happen in one room with the windows aimed at the view: a wood burner at the sitting end, a table in the middle, the kitchen along the back. Three bedrooms and a shower room lead off the hall, two kings and a twin. Nothing in the building has a step in it, and the dog's route between burner and door runs to six paces.

Seven in the morning and the door stands open on a garden with nothing beyond it but moor. The dog has been out and come back with wet feet, which is what the hall was built for. Somebody is at the window with a mug and no conversation in them. The wood burner went out overnight and nobody has admitted to being the one who will relight it.

Todmorden lies in the valley below with its market and its odd shops, Hebden Bridge a little further along the same floor. The Rochdale Canal joins the two, a level towpath with miles of it and no gate to interrupt a dog. Above the houses Stoodley Pike stands on the ridge, a stone obelisk you can see from most of the valley, and Hardcastle Crags keeps a wooded clough with a mill at the bottom of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Lower Mount Farm - On The Tops dog friendly?

Yes, Lower Mount Farm welcomes one dog. The bungalow has a dedicated dog-friendly hall designed specifically for muddy boots, wet coats and drying off a dog after a moor walk, so it's clear that four-legged guests were very much part of the thinking when this place was set up.

  • Are dogs allowed at Lower Mount Farm - On The Tops year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. What we can say is that with open moor on the doorstep and the Rochdale Canal towpath nearby, it's the kind of place that suits a dog visit in any season.

  • What should I know before visiting Lower Mount Farm - On The Tops with my dog?

The booking allows one dog, so if you're travelling with more than one, check with the property in advance. On the practical side, the enclosed lawned garden gives your dog a safe space to roam, the hall is built for post-walk clean-ups, and the bungalow is entirely step-free, making it easy for dogs to move between the wood burner and the door — apparently about six paces.
