Healey Dell Nature Reserve

Greater Manchester

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A fitter dog will relish the steep sections of this wooded gorge along the River Spodden, with waterfalls and a dramatic Victorian viaduct to admire.

Healey Dell is a steep wooded gorge cut by the River Spodden on the edge of Rochdale, where the fast flowing water has carved a series of small waterfalls and once powered corn, wool and cotton mills whose remains still line the valley. A fitter dog will enjoy the steep sections and steps down into the gorge more than one that prefers flat, easy ground. A disused Victorian railway line now crosses the dell on a viaduct roughly 30 metres above the valley floor, giving wide views down through the trees, and forms part of this 3.4km circular walk that combines the old trackbed with woodland paths dropping to the riverside. The going includes some steep sections and steps down into the gorge, so the reserve suits a fitter dog more than a flat, easy stroll.

This is a dog friendly nature reserve, and the woodland paths give a dog with reasonable recall moderate freedom off the lead, though the steep drops into the gorge and onto the viaduct mean keeping a close eye near the edges. There is no livestock on site. The River Spodden gives shallow spots for a paddle away from the old mill weirs, where the current picks up. Mind other visitors and wildlife on the narrower woodland paths. The on site cafe and accessible toilets make this an easy stop before or after the walk, and parking is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Healey Dell Nature Reserve dog friendly?

Yes, Healey Dell Nature Reserve is a dog friendly site and scores 8 out of 10 on our dog friendly rating. There's no livestock on site, free parking right at the reserve, and an on-site café and accessible toilets make it a convenient stop before or after your walk.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Healey Dell Nature Reserve?

Dogs with reasonable recall can enjoy moderate freedom off the lead on the woodland paths. That said, the gorge has some steep drops and the viaduct sits around 30 metres above the valley floor, so you'll want to keep a close eye near the edges and be mindful of other visitors on the narrower paths.

  • What should I know before visiting Healey Dell Nature Reserve with my dog?

This is a 3.4km circular walk with steep sections and steps down into the gorge, so it suits a fitter, more agile dog better than one who prefers flat ground. The River Spodden offers shallow spots for a paddle, though it's worth steering clear of the old mill weirs where the current picks up. Wildlife is present throughout the woodland, so good recall will help you both get the most out of the visit.
