Flamborough, East Yorkshire

The dog is at the back fence again, watching the old lighthouse across a south facing lawn. Rock Lobster stands at the top of Flamborough Head with its face to the sea. It sleeps four, welcomes one dog, and its rear garden is large, enclosed and turned to the sun for the length of the day, rarer in dog friendly accommodation on this coast than it ought to be.

Two steps at the front door and nothing above ground level after them. Oak floors run through the house, the lounge holds a wood burner and deep sofas, and the kitchen and dining room at the back open by patio doors onto the grass. The king bedroom looks out at the water and the twin sits beside it, both sharing a bathroom with a walk-in shower where a dog can be dealt with before the oak boards are.

The address is the whole of it. Flamborough Head is chalk headland with a coast path along the top and seals and dolphins in the water beneath, and the cliff path to the beach starts a few minutes from the gate, steep enough that a dog is better on a lead going down. Couples and small families who came for the coast instead of the town are in the right place.

The lighthouse at the head runs tours through the season and keeps a cafe looking out to sea, and the coast path leaves it in both directions round the chalk. Bempton Cliffs lie north, holding 250,000 seabirds through the breeding season with gannets among them and a clifftop trail a dog can walk on a lead. Flamborough village sits inland with a Norman church and a good pub.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Rock Lobster dog friendly?

Yes, Rock Lobster welcomes one dog. The rear garden is large, enclosed and south facing, which the listing notes is rarer in dog-friendly accommodation on this coast than it ought to be — so it's genuinely set up for a dog to be comfortable, not just tolerated.

  • Are dogs allowed at Rock Lobster year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. The surrounding area at Flamborough Head is walkable year round, making it a good base in any season.

  • What should I know before visiting Rock Lobster with my dog?

The house is all on one floor after two steps at the front door, with oak floors throughout, so it's worth giving your dog a rinse in the walk-in shower after a beach trip before they head inside. The cliff path to the beach starts a few minutes from the gate but is steep enough that a lead is sensible on the way down, and the nearby Bempton Cliffs trail also requires dogs to be kept on leads.
