Cushendun is a National Trust village of Cornish looking cottages, built at the foot of Glendun for a Glens landowner in memory of his Cornish wife, which is a strange and rather good thing to find on this coast. Seaview Cottage is a dog friendly stay for six in it, two dogs welcome, three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with an open fire and sand half a mile off.
The outdoor space is worth being exact about. It is enclosed the whole way round, with a barbecue standing on it, and it is a garden shared with the neighbouring cottage rather than this one's alone. The two book together, which is how a larger party ends up with all of it. The fencing will hold two dogs; whether they have the grass to themselves depends on who else is in that week.
Inside are two doubles and a twin, one double with its own shower room, so six people get through a morning without a rota forming. The open fire comes with the first basket of logs and the evening arranges itself around it. The Glens meet the sea here and the coast is at its best either side of the village. Cushendun Beach is a short walk, caves cut into old red sandstone at the southern end of it. Glenariff Forest Park is 6 miles down the coast road, a gorge of waterfalls and boardwalk that takes dogs, and the road north climbs towards Torr Head with the Mull of Kintyre across the channel. Two dogs get sand and woodland in one week.
