Keswick, Cumbria
A one bedroom bungalow for two in a quiet Keswick cul-de-sac, with an enclosed lawned garden, a gas fire and a wood burner in the kitchen, three dogs welcome.
The Fold takes three dogs and sleeps two, which is the wrong way round from almost everything else in Keswick and exactly right for one sort of holiday. It is a dog friendly bungalow in a quiet cul-de-sac, all of it on the level, with an enclosed garden of lawn and patio behind mature flowering shrubs. The hall inside the front door exists to deal with paws before they get any further.
A gas fire heats the lounge and a wood burner heats the kitchen, an unusual arrangement and a sensible one: the warmest room in the house is the one with the hard floor, so three soaked dogs dry off in there and nobody minds. A utility room takes the rest. The bedroom is a double and the bathroom carries a shower over the bath.
Three dogs are steaming gently in front of the kitchen burner and not one of them intends to move. Somebody has walked into town beside the Greta for a paper and come back the long way round. The patio doors stand open onto the garden, the shrubs are full of birds that all three dogs have agreed to ignore, and nothing else has been planned.
Town is a level half mile away along the river instead of the road, theatre, museums and plenty to eat at the end of it. Derwentwater opens beyond that, and the launches running from the marina will carry a dog round the lake and set it down at a jetty to walk home. Friar's Crag and the shore path are flat and easy. Skiddaw and Blencathra stand behind the house for a day that is not.

Is The Fold dog friendly?
The Fold is dog friendly in the most committed sense — it welcomes up to three dogs, which is more than most places in Keswick manage. There's an enclosed garden of lawn and patio for them to enjoy, a dedicated hall space for muddy paws at the front door, and a utility room to handle the rest of the wet kit.
Are dogs allowed at The Fold year round?
The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, and The Fold is set up in a way that strongly suggests year-round use — a wood burner in the kitchen and a gas fire in the lounge make it a genuinely warm bolthole in colder months. It's worth confirming directly with the owner if you're planning an off-season trip.
What should I know before visiting The Fold with my dog?
The Fold takes up to three dogs and has clearly been arranged with wet, muddy animals in mind — the hall handles paws at the door, the utility room takes damp kit, and the wood burner in the kitchen (with its hard floor) is the warmest room in the house, perfect for drying off after a day out. The enclosed garden is fully level, as is the route into Keswick along the River Greta, so it works well for dogs who struggle with steps or steep terrain. For bigger days out, Skiddaw and Blencathra are right on the doorstep.
