Two dogs are stretched on the floor of a room with a ceiling four times their height and a wood burner going at one end of it. The Old Tin School is a studio for two at Low Mill in Farndale, dog friendly for a pair of medium sized dogs, with an enclosed garden looking out over the dale and the moor rising behind it.

The whole place is one high open space. A kitchen down one side, a table laid for two, sofas gathered round the burner, and an ornate wrought iron double standing at the far end of it. The bathroom alongside takes a bath and a shower on their own. Everything is at ground level and the garden opens straight off it, patio and seating included, as far as either dog needs to travel.

The rules here are worth reading before you book: two medium sized dogs, quiet ones, kept off the furniture, and not left alone in the place unless they are content in a crate. Owners who can meet that get one of the quietest addresses in the North York Moors, and a dale outside the door holding a river, a road and a handful of houses and very little else.

Farndale is the daffodil valley, and the wild ones run along the banks of the River Dove for miles with people coming from the whole county to walk beside them. Blakey Ridge climbs to the Lion Inn out on the tops, and the old Rosedale railway makes a level track round the head of the next dale. Hutton le Hole, Helmsley and Pickering keep the shops and tearooms. A dog has 600 square miles of heather from here.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is The Old Tin School dog friendly?

Yes, The Old Tin School welcomes dogs — up to two medium-sized ones. The studio sits at ground level with an enclosed garden opening straight off it, so your dogs have easy access to outdoor space without any steps or stairs to navigate.

  • Are dogs allowed at The Old Tin School year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. What is clear is that the setup — a warm wood burner, enclosed garden and single-level space — suits a dog visit at any time of year.

  • What should I know before visiting The Old Tin School with my dog?

The house rules are specific and worth reading carefully before you book. Dogs must be medium-sized, reasonably quiet, kept off the furniture, and not left alone in the property unless they're settled in a crate. Meet those conditions and you've got a very peaceful base in Farndale, with the North York Moors and some excellent walking right outside the door.
