Indoors begins with parquet and panelling in the hall, then a lounge holding an open fire, then a kitchen and diner with an island and banquette seating down one side. A cinema room opens off that with a deep window seat over the garden, and a shower room beside it on the same level means the dogs' end of the day never goes upstairs. Both bedrooms above keep bathrooms of their own.
Two couples with two dogs, or a family of four, either way people who mean to spend the evening outdoors. The sauna and the tub are the reason to book, and the garden holding them is walled and gated. The twin bedroom keeps a day bed in the window looking at the castle, which is the best seat in the building and will be argued over by Tuesday.
Helmsley is a few hundred yards down the road: a market square, a ruined castle above it and more places to eat than a town this size ought to have. The river path follows the valley to Rievaulx, where the abbey stands roofless in a wooded bowl. The moor road climbs north onto the tops, and the walking by the river is level enough for any dog.
