Wheelhouse Cottage sits beside the River Ea and Wheelhouse bridge in Cartmel, a short walk from the village square, and it comes with something special: a private riverside bank of its own, reached across an iron bridge. Two dogs are welcome at this beautiful, dog friendly cottage, and wonderful woodland, lakeside and mountain walks start straight from the doorstep.

Inside, the lounge has plump settees, exposed ceiling beams, cosy rugs and a roaring wood burning stove, and when the walking is done the dogs claim the hearth before the tea has brewed. The whole ground floor is warmed from beneath by underfloor heating. The kitchen is light and airy, with a door out to the walled garden, and dinner is served in the conservatory, looking over the river. Upstairs, two king size bedrooms are beautifully decorated with antique furnishings, and they share a stylish contemporary bathroom.

To the front, a terraced area looks out over the river and the meadow beyond. To the rear is the walled garden, private and delightful, with a garden pod that has a heater and a mini fridge, so the outdoors can be enjoyed all year. There is a table and chairs, and a Kadai fire bowl and grill for cooking outside, with the dogs dozing on the warm side of the fire. Across the iron bridge, the riverside bank makes a peaceful spot for a picnic surrounded by nature.

Cartmel has a clutch of excellent inns, cafes and restaurants, including Michelin starred ones. Walks lead the dogs up Hampsfell and through Eggerslack Wood towards the Lake District mountains, and the Windermere steamer winds into the central fells past Bowness and Sawrey.
