Hampsfell Hospice from Grange-over-Sands

Cumbria

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10Shady Eggerslack Wood gives dogs room to roam on this climb from Grange-over-Sands to the 1846 Hospice on Hampsfell, with views to the Isle of Man.

Hampsfell is a low limestone fell rising straight behind Grange-over-Sands, and its summit carries the Hospice, a small square stone tower built in 1846 by a vicar of Cartmel as a shelter for travellers. Sheep graze the open fell, so a lead is wise, but a dog with good recall can range through shady Eggerslack Wood. Verses inside explain its purpose, and a rotating view indicator picks out landmarks as far as Snaefell on the Isle of Man. This 7.5km circuit starts from the pay and display car park near the park in Grange, climbs through Eggerslack Wood on the Cistercian Way, crosses patches of limestone pavement and open grassy fell to the Hospice, then drops by Fell End and a farm lane back through the town to the promenade. There is around 244 metres of climbing, with the views growing all the way across Morecambe Bay to the Pennines, the Howgills and the central fells.

This dog friendly walk mixes shady woodland with open fell, and a dog with good recall can have some freedom in Eggerslack Wood and on the top. Sheep graze Hampsfell, so dogs should be on a lead wherever stock is around, and roe deer live in the woods. The route crosses several stone wall stiles and ladder stiles, which can be awkward for bigger dogs that need lifting. There is no reliable water once you leave the wood, so carry some. Back in Grange the promenade has cafes and toilets, and the flat walk along it makes a gentle finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hampsfell Hospice from Grange-over-Sands dog friendly?

Yes, Hampsfell Hospice from Grange-over-Sands scores 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. It is all on public paths and access land, the woodland gives shade and the open top gives dogs room to roam. The score reflects the sheep grazing on the fell, which means a lead for part of the walk, and several stone and ladder stiles that are awkward for larger dogs.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Hampsfell Hospice from Grange-over-Sands?

Partly. In Eggerslack Wood and on the open limestone top there is moderate off-lead potential for a dog with reliable recall, but sheep graze Hampsfell and roe deer live in the woods, so keep your dog close and put the lead on whenever stock is in sight. The return through Grange uses residential roads and the promenade, where a lead is needed.

  • What should I know before visiting Hampsfell Hospice from Grange-over-Sands with my dog?

The route has several wall stiles and ladder stiles, so be ready to lift a larger dog or look for gaps and gates. There is no water on the upper part, so carry some. Parking in Grange is pay and display, with cafes and public toilets near the promenade. The Hospice is open to shelter in, and its view indicator names the fells and landmarks in sight.
