Eaves Wood and the Pepper Pot
Lancashire
Eaves Wood sits on a limestone hill above the village of Silverdale, in the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape on the Lancashire and Cumbria border, and is known for its yew trees, some many centuries old, and its outcrops of bare limestone pavement. Ticks are common here from March to October, so check a dog over afterwards, though livestock is rarely seen. This 5km circular walk climbs from the car park on Park Lane through the wood's rough stone paths, with several steep sections and steps, to reach the Pepper Pot, a small domed monument built in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. From its clearing the view opens over Silverdale to Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland fells beyond. The paths can be muddy in winter and the limestone slippery when wet, so the going is more demanding than the distance suggests.
This is a dog friendly walk through one of the best known woods in the National Landscape, and a dog with reliable recall has plenty of woodland scent and space to enjoy off the lead on the quieter paths. Livestock is occasionally present, so keep dogs on a lead if you see grazing animals, and the reserve is a known hotspot for ticks between March and October, so check your dog over afterwards. There is no natural water on the route, so carry some for a warm day. Bins for dog waste are provided at the Park Lane car park. Silverdale village, a short walk or drive away, has cafes and a dog friendly pub for afterwards.
