There is an outside shower in the garden at Hillside House, cold, and after a walk along the Lune it is where two dogs get rinsed before they are let near the carpets. This is a Victorian terrace in the middle of Kirkby Lonsdale, sleeping eight across four bedrooms, and a dog friendly house for a family gathering or a group of walkers.

The house climbs over four floors. On the ground floor are a living room with a bay window, a dining room with a grandfather clock, an antique fireplace and a table for eight, and the kitchen with its Rayburn, which is where the dogs will settle. The bathroom and a shower room are on the first floor, and above that two more flights lead to the bedrooms, one of them looking over St Mary's Church to the fells. A stairgate is provided for anyone keeping the dogs downstairs.

Behind the house is an enclosed garden with somewhere to sit, and there is a step within it. It is the place for the dogs first thing and last thing, and for the group to gather with a drink after a day out, boots lined up by the back door and two dogs already asleep inside, done for the day.

Kirkby Lonsdale is a small market town of independent shops, and a dog can walk from the door down to Devil's Bridge, the medieval crossing over the Lune, and along to Ruskin's View above the river. Ingleton and its waterfalls trail are twenty minutes away by car, with Ingleborough above, and the Lake District is about half an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hillside House dog friendly?

Yes, Hillside House welcomes two dogs. It's a Victorian town house set up with dogs genuinely in mind — there's an enclosed rear garden for them to use first thing and last thing, an outside cold shower to rinse muddy paws after a walk, and the kitchen with its Rayburn tends to be where dogs naturally settle in.

  • Are dogs allowed at Hillside House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so it's best to check directly with the owner when booking. What's clear is that the house is set up for dogs as a matter of course, not as an afterthought, which suggests it's a well-practised arrangement throughout the year.

  • What should I know before visiting Hillside House with my dog?

The house is a tall Victorian terrace spread over four floors, so bear in mind there are stairs throughout — a stairgate is provided if you want to keep the dogs to the lower levels. The rear garden is enclosed, which is handy for letting dogs out safely, though there is one step within it to be aware of. After walks along the Lune, the outside cold shower is there to get muddy dogs clean before they come back inside.
