Humphrey Head
Cumbria
Humphrey Head is a small limestone headland jutting into Morecambe Bay near Cartmel, its cliffs dropping sharply above the sands of the bay. Dogs must stay on a lead throughout, since sheep graze the headland and the cliffs are sheer and unfenced. Leased from the Holker Estate and managed as a nature reserve by Cumbria Wildlife Trust since 1992, its unfertilised limestone grassland supports green-winged orchids, common rock-rose and wild thyme, and its cliffs are home to nesting peregrine falcons. This short, easy walk climbs from the car park at the road end to the highest point of the Head and back, a round trip of around 2.4km with gentle gradients. Local tradition holds that England's last wolf was killed here, and the views stretch to Arnside Knott.
This is a dog friendly walk to one of the best short viewpoints on Morecambe Bay, though dogs must be kept on a lead throughout the reserve. Sheep graze the limestone grassland on top of the Head, and the cliffs on the western side are sheer, so a lead also keeps dogs back from the edge. There is no water on the route for a dog to drink or paddle in, and no shade, so this suits a cooler day more than a hot one. Curlew, redshank and shelduck feed on the sands below at low tide, giving a dog plenty to watch without going onto the marsh. Parking is limited to a small area at Holy Well Lane, and Grange-over-Sands, a short drive away, has cafes afterwards.

Is Humphrey Head dog friendly?
Humphrey Head scores 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. It's a short, easy walk to a dramatic limestone headland with wide views across Morecambe Bay, orchids and nesting peregrines on the cliffs. It loses marks because dogs must be kept on a lead at all times within the nature reserve, both because sheep graze the clifftop grassland and because the western cliffs are sheer, so there is no scope for off-lead exploring here.
Can dogs be off lead at Humphrey Head?
No, dogs must be kept on a lead throughout Humphrey Head nature reserve. Sheep graze the limestone grassland on top of the headland, and the cliffs on the western side are sheer with no fencing, so a lead is important for safety as well as for the grazing animals and nesting birds. The walk itself is short and gentle, so a dog on a lead can still enjoy the views and the sea air.
What should I know before visiting Humphrey Head with my dog?
Keep your dog on a lead throughout: sheep graze the clifftop grassland, and the cliffs on the western side of the headland are sheer and unfenced. Parking is limited to a small area at Holy Well Lane at the road end. There is no water or shade on the route, so bring water for your dog, particularly on a warm day. Check tide times if you plan to extend the walk onto the saltmarsh below the Head.
