Sixteen acres of wildflower meadow and cut paths surround Wittle Cottage, and in the middle of them is a large lake. It is not fenced, and the barn has direct access to it on site, which is the first thing a dog owner should know. This dog friendly barn near Quidenham sleeps ten and takes two dogs, and the owners' rule is that dogs stay on leads throughout the stay.

The back garden belongs to the cottage alone. It is enclosed and set up for eating outside, with a table, seats and a gas barbecue. The meadows, the lake and the tennis court are shared with the owners, and they are what most people come for: a morning circuit of the mown paths with the dogs on their leads, birds lifting out of the long grass.

Inside, the barn has exposed beams and two living spaces. The open plan kitchen and dining area has a range, and the second lounge has the wood burner and a double height window looking across the garden to open countryside beyond. There is a twin bedroom on the ground floor and four more upstairs, one kingsize with an en suite shower and the fifth reached through the fourth. The private hot tub is the evening, and the dogs, walked and fed, tend to find the warmest end of the lounge.

The Brecks begin to the west, with Knettishall Heath and the Pingo Trail in Thetford Forest good country for a dog on a long walk. The nearest villages, with their gastro pubs and farm shop, are two miles off, and Norwich and the north Norfolk coast are both within reach for a day out.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Wittle Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Wittle Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The barn sleeps ten people and sits within sixteen acres of wildflower meadow, shared grounds and a lake, so there's plenty of space to explore together. Dogs need to be kept on leads throughout the stay, both inside and out.

  • Are dogs allowed at Wittle Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the owners when booking to confirm availability for your dates. What is consistent is the rule that dogs are kept on leads for the duration of the stay, whatever the time of year.

  • What should I know before visiting Wittle Cottage with my dog?

The most important thing to be aware of is that the sixteen acres of grounds, including the lake, are unfenced, and the barn has direct access to the water — so leads are essential at all times, not just on walks. The back garden is the exception: it's privately enclosed and a safe spot for your dogs to settle while you're eating outside. The shared grounds include mown paths through the meadows, and the surrounding area — including Knettishall Heath and Thetford Forest's Pingo Trail — offers good walking country nearby.
