Carronbridge Nithside Walk

Dumfries and Galloway

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A short, level loop from Carronbridge beside the River Nith, easy going for dogs on a lead, with views across to Drumlanrig Castle for you.

Carronbridge is a small village on the A76 just north of Thornhill in upper Nithsdale, close to where the Carron joins the River Nith. Dogs need a lead crossing the A76 and over the stiles on this route, and riverside fields may hold livestock, though the level going suits an easy outing. This 3km loop, described by Scotland Starts Here, leaves the village hall, crosses the A76 and follows a lane past cottages above the Carron, then goes through a kissing gate alongside a plantation and past the sandstone outcrop of Bell Craig. From the riverside there are views across the Nith to Drumlanrig Castle, and to the remains of Tibbers Castle among the trees on the far bank. The path follows the Nith downstream to the confluence, crosses a metal footbridge over the Carron and returns through Morton Mill and along the Glasgow Road. It is almost level, with about 20 metres of climbing, on pavement, hard tracks and grass, with gates and stiles, and takes around an hour.

This is a gentle dog friendly walk for a short outing, with the river close by for a drink at the quieter spots. It is a lead walk for much of the way: the route crosses the A76 and finishes on the Glasgow Road, and the riverside fields may hold sheep or cattle. Stiles on the route mean larger dogs may need lifting, so check your dog can manage before setting out. Parking is beside the village hall, and Thornhill has shops and cafes for afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Carronbridge Nithside Walk dog friendly?

Yes, it scores 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. It is a short, flat riverside loop with good views and the River Nith alongside for part of the way. The score reflects the road crossing and road sections at each end, the stiles, which some dogs will need help over, and the possibility of livestock in the riverside fields.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Carronbridge Nithside Walk?

Not for much of it. The loop crosses the busy A76 and returns along the Glasgow Road, so a lead is needed at both ends. The riverside section runs through farmland, where sheep or cattle may be grazing, so keep your dog on a lead there too unless the fields are clearly empty. Dogs should never be allowed into the Nith when it is running high.

  • What should I know before visiting Carronbridge Nithside Walk with my dog?

The route is only about 3km and takes around an hour, but it includes gates and stiles, so check that your dog can be lifted or can manage them. Take care crossing the A76 at the start. Park by the village hall in Carronview, off the A76 north of Thornhill. There are no facilities on the walk, but Thornhill is a short drive away.
