Congleton Park and the River Dane
Cheshire
Congleton Park is a 24 acre Victorian park at the heart of the town, its floral displays and ornamental lawns bordered by the River Dane and the ancient Park Wood. There's no livestock on this route, so a dog can enjoy the riverside and canal towpath stretches, aside from a lead through town. This 8 kilometre circular walk leaves the park along the river, crosses the A54 onto Tommy's Lane and a path towards the Biddulph Valley Way, then joins the Macclesfield Canal towpath, changing banks at Roving Bridge and passing through Congleton Wharf. From there the route returns through Congleton town centre, picking up the River Walk back into the park. It's a gentle route without any real climbing, mixing parkland, riverside and canal towpath, and takes around two and a half hours at an easy pace.
This dog friendly walk mixes some genuinely relaxed stretches with sections that need more care. Inside Congleton Park itself and along the quieter parts of the canal towpath, dogs have good off-lead potential with no livestock anywhere on the route, but the crossing of the A54 and the walk back through the town centre call for a lead. The River Dane and the canal both give a dog the chance to cool off on a hot day, and the riverside corridor through the park is a good source of scent and wildlife interest. Congleton Park has a cafe, and the town has further pubs and cafes on the route. Parking is pay and display at the park.

All dog friendly stays in CheshireFrequently Asked Questions
Is Congleton Park and the River Dane dog friendly?
This is a solid choice for a dog walk, earning a 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The 8 kilometre circular route is free of livestock throughout, which makes a real difference, and there are good opportunities for dogs to cool off in both the River Dane and the Macclesfield Canal. A cafe in the park and further pubs and cafes in town mean refreshment stops are easy to plan around.
Can dogs be off lead at Congleton Park and the River Dane?
There's genuinely good off-lead potential along the quieter stretches of the route — particularly inside Congleton Park itself and along the canal towpath — as there's no livestock anywhere on the walk. That said, you'll want to put the lead back on for the crossing of the A54 and the return section through Congleton town centre, so it's a mix rather than a fully off-lead route.
What should I know before visiting Congleton Park and the River Dane with my dog?
The route is a gentle, largely flat 8 kilometre loop taking around two and a half hours at an easy pace, so it suits most dogs without being too demanding. The A54 road crossing and the town centre section require a lead, so it's worth being prepared to switch between on and off lead as you go. Parking is pay and display at Congleton Park car park off Park Road, so bring change or check payment options before you set off.
