Tegg's Nose Country Park Trail

Cheshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10Old quarry machinery and viewpoints across the whole Cheshire Plain reward this short waymarked loop for a dog on a lead near Macclesfield.

Tegg's Nose is a 380 metre gritstone hill just east of Macclesfield, quarried from the 16th century until 1955. Cattle and sheep graze the summer pastures here, so this is a lead walk for a dog, past the restored crushing machinery on the old quarry floor. Stone was first cut by hand for buildings and gravestones, including a variety known as Tegg's Nose Pink, and from the 1930s blasting produced stone for roads and airfields. Today it is a Cheshire East country park and a Regionally Important Geological Site. The waymarked Tegg's Nose Trail is a 4km circuit from the visitor centre, climbing past the machinery to viewpoints above the Bottoms, Teggsnose and Ridgegate reservoirs, with the Cheshire Plain stretching west to the Welsh hills on a clear day. Paths are uneven with loose stone, steps and kissing gates.

This dog friendly walk suits a short, varied outing, but it is not a free-running site for most of the year. Cattle graze the summer pastures and sheep use the hillside, so dogs need a lead wherever stock is about, and old quarry faces mean keeping a dog close near the edges. There is no reliable stream on the route, so carry water for your dog, and the exposed top has little shade. Dogs are welcome across the park under control, with poo bins near the visitor centre. The pay and display car park has toilets and The Nose coffee shop, and the Gritstone Trail continues into Macclesfield Forest for a longer day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Tegg's Nose Country Park Trail dog friendly?

Yes, dogs are welcome across the park and it makes for a lovely short outing with your dog. The 4km waymarked trail takes in old quarry machinery and sweeping views across the Cheshire Plain, with poo bins near the visitor centre and a coffee shop on site. It scores 7/10 for dog friendliness, reflecting the fact that leads are required for much of the year due to grazing livestock.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Tegg's Nose Country Park Trail?

For most of the year, this is a lead walk. Cattle graze the summer pastures and sheep use the hillside, so dogs need to be kept on a lead wherever stock is present. The old quarry faces also make it wise to keep dogs close near the edges, so confident off-lead dogs will need to wait for a more suitable spot.

  • What should I know before visiting Tegg's Nose Country Park Trail with my dog?

There is no reliable stream on the route, so it's important to bring enough water for your dog, especially as the exposed hilltop offers little shade. The paths are uneven with loose stone, steps and kissing gates, so it's worth being prepared for rougher terrain underfoot. Parking is pay and display at the country park car park, and The Nose coffee shop is on site if you fancy a break after the walk.
