The Little Mill Inn

New Mills, Derbyshire

Yes. Dogs can stay overnight.

An 18th century mill at the end of a Peak District lane, with a 35-foot waterwheel, two acres of riverside garden for dogs and walks from the door.

The Little Mill Inn is a country pub, restaurant and B&B in an 18th century mill at the end of a Peak District lane, Grade II listed, with a 35-foot waterwheel standing over Rowarth Brook at the door. There are eleven walking routes from the door, and for a dog friendly inn that matters: the Peak District footpaths begin at the gate.

The Mill has five B&B rooms, two shepherd's huts and two self-catering apartments, each with its own character. The Balcony Room looks over Rowarth Brook and the waterwheel, the room everyone asks for has doors that open onto the gardens, and the huts have an electric log burner and a walk-in shower. The Mill doesn't state the number of dogs allowed, or whether one can be left alone, so tell the team what you need, your dog included, when you book; they say they will match you to the right room.

Almost everything is made from scratch, with wild garlic, mushrooms and damsons foraged from the surrounding hills, and the Sunday roast is worth the drive. Coach House Brewery makes the house ale, with three rotating cask ales beside it. The inn doesn't mention dogs at the tables indoors, so check when you book; out in the garden dogs are welcome, and on the days it is lit, the Mini Mill stone oven turns out woodfire pizza named for Kinder Scout, Mam Tor and Lantern Pike.

Two acres of riverside garden follow Rowarth Brook, and the original safe and post box from the mill's years as the village post office are still inside. Sett Valley Trail: Hayfield to New Mills is 2 miles off on Wildpack's map for a change of scene with the dog, and five cycling routes start from the door too.
