Sett Valley Trail: Hayfield to New Mills
Derbyshire
The Sett Valley Trail follows the trackbed of a branch railway that ran from New Mills up the valley to Hayfield from 1868 until 1970. It's flat, traffic-free and level throughout, ideal for a dog that prefers gentle going to a scramble. Derbyshire County Council bought the line in 1973 and opened it as a path in 1979, and the old Hayfield station is now a car park and picnic area. The trail runs 4km west through Birch Vale, Thornsett and Ollersett along the lower valley of the River Sett, through riverside woodland and meadows with mill remains along the way, and ends in New Mills, where the Torrs Riverside Park and the Millennium Walkway lie in the gorge below the town. Walked there and back it is about 8km. The path is level and traffic-free, with only the gentle gradient of the old railway.
This is an easy dog friendly walk for dogs of any age. The path is shared with cyclists and horse riders, as the Hayfield to Birch Vale section is part of the Pennine Bridleway, so recall matters and a lead is sensible when bikes or horses approach. Away from them, a well-behaved dog can enjoy the woodland verges, and the River Sett runs alongside for sections of the route. Hayfield has a pay and display car park with toilets at the start, and there are pubs and cafes in both Hayfield and New Mills.

Is Sett Valley Trail: Hayfield to New Mills dog friendly?
Yes, it scores 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness. It is flat, traffic-free and easy on older legs, with woodland verges, the River Sett alongside for sections and toilets at the start. The one real caveat is that the path is shared with cyclists and horse riders, so dogs need good manners around bikes and horses.
Can dogs be off lead at Sett Valley Trail: Hayfield to New Mills?
Yes, in places, if your dog has good recall. The trail runs along an old railway line away from roads and is mostly separated from the fields, so livestock is rarely met on the path. It is a shared-use route and part of the Pennine Bridleway between Hayfield and Birch Vale, so put your dog on a lead when cyclists or horses come by, and near the town ends.
What should I know before visiting Sett Valley Trail: Hayfield to New Mills with my dog?
The trail is 4km each way, so turn back whenever your dog has had enough. The surface is firm and level, but it can be busy with bikes at weekends. Parking at the Hayfield picnic site is pay and display, with toilets and a picnic area. In New Mills the trail links to the Torrs Riverside Park in the gorge below the town, which is worth the short extra walk.
