Lyme Park, the Cage and Lantern Wood
Cheshire
Lyme is a National Trust estate on the western edge of the Peak District above Disley, where a 16th century house sits in a medieval deer park of moorland, woodland and grass that still holds red and fallow deer. Dogs stay on a short lead throughout, for the deer and cattle, close to both on the climb to the Cage. This circuit of about 4.8km, with 128 metres of climbing, starts from the main car park and heads up the short, steep slope of Cage Hill to the Cage, a hunting lodge that was later used as a park keeper's cottage and a lock-up, with views across Greater Manchester and the Cheshire Plain. The route then crosses moorland along the edge of the deer sanctuary, drops into Lantern Wood to the stone Lantern folly and returns through Turfhouse Meadow past the pond. Paths are grassy tracks and woodland trails, muddy after rain.
This is a dog friendly estate in that dogs are welcome across the park, but it is an on-lead walk from start to finish. The National Trust asks for dogs to be kept on a short lead throughout Lyme because of the free-roaming deer and grazing cattle, and the deer are often close to the paths, so a dog that pulls towards wildlife will find it frustrating. The stream crossings give a drink along the way, and Lantern Wood offers shade on warm days. Parking is in the National Trust car park, free for members, and there are cafes and toilets near the house and the Timber Yard.

All dog friendly stays in CheshireFrequently Asked Questions
Is Lyme Park, the Cage and Lantern Wood dog friendly?
Dogs are welcome at Lyme, and this walk scores 6 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The parkland, moor and woodland make an interesting circuit with plenty of scents and some water on the way. The score is held down by the rule that dogs stay on a short lead throughout the estate because of the deer and cattle, so it is a walk for dogs content on a lead.
Can dogs be off lead at Lyme Park, the Cage and Lantern Wood?
No. The National Trust asks for dogs to be kept on a short lead at all times at Lyme, including the parkland, moorland and gardens. Red and fallow deer roam the park and gather in the deer sanctuary, and cattle graze parts of the estate, so the rule is there to protect both wildlife and dogs. If your dog needs a run, pair this with an off-lead walk elsewhere.
What should I know before visiting Lyme Park, the Cage and Lantern Wood with my dog?
The climb to the Cage is short but steep, and paths can be muddy, so good footwear helps. Keep the lead short, as deer are often close to the paths and can be seen from almost anywhere on the route. The National Trust car park is free for members and pay on entry for others. There are cafes and toilets near the house and at the Timber Yard, but check dog access inside before you go.
