Cors Caron Boardwalk and Bog Hide
Ceredigion
Cors Caron National Nature Reserve fills the broad valley of the River Teifi just north of Tregaron, more than 800 hectares of wetland built around three raised peat bogs that have been forming for around 12,000 years, and dogs stay on a lead across the boardwalk to protect the ground nesting birds. They are among the most intact raised bogs in Britain, with peat up to ten metres deep, surrounded by reedbeds, fen, wet grassland and pools, home to red kites, curlew and otters. The Cors Caron Walk is Natural Resources Wales' signature trail here: a 2.6km route from the main car park on an all-weather surface and boardwalk, completely flat, out over the south-east bog to a large accessible bird hide. For a longer outing, the Old Railway Walk follows the former Aberystwyth to Carmarthen line along the edge of the reserve to Ystrad Meurig, 10.2km there and back on a firm surface shared with cyclists and horse riders.
This is a dog friendly nature reserve, but one where the wildlife comes first. NRW asks owners to keep dogs on a lead where signs ask, and under close control elsewhere so they do not disturb ground-nesting birds, and dogs are not allowed on the separate Riverside Walk. In practice this is a lead walk on the boardwalk, and livestock graze parts of the reserve. There is no shade on the open bog, and adders live here. Parking is free, and accessible toilets at the main car park are open at all times.

Is Cors Caron Boardwalk and Bog Hide dog friendly?
Cors Caron is a dog-friendly nature reserve, though it earns a 7/10 rating because wildlife protection takes priority here. Dogs are welcome on the main Cors Caron Walk — a flat 2.6km boardwalk trail out to the bog hide — and on the longer Old Railway Walk along the reserve's edge, but they are not permitted on the separate Riverside Walk.
Can dogs be off lead at Cors Caron Boardwalk and Bog Hide?
On the boardwalk itself, dogs need to be kept on a lead to protect the ground-nesting birds that breed across the bog. Elsewhere on the reserve, Natural Resources Wales asks that dogs are kept under close control so they don't disturb wildlife, and you should follow any additional lead signs you encounter. Livestock also graze parts of the reserve, so a lead is the sensible default throughout.
What should I know before visiting Cors Caron Boardwalk and Bog Hide with my dog?
There are a few things worth bearing in mind before you head out. The open bog offers no shade, so on warm days bring water for your dog and time your visit accordingly — adders also live on the reserve, so keeping your dog on a lead and to the path is genuinely good advice here, not just a rule. On the practical side, parking at the main car park on the B4343 is free, accessible toilets are open at all times, and cafes and pubs in nearby Tregaron can round off the visit nicely.
