Hafod Estate Lady's Walk
Ceredigion
Hafod is a 200 hectare estate in the upper Ystwyth valley, laid out from the 1780s by Thomas Johnes to the fashionable taste of the day for wild, romantic scenery, and dogs can go off lead under control through the woodland once clear of the grazing parkland. His house has gone, but the network of walks he designed to show off the gorges, cascades and hanging woods survives and has been restored, with more than eight miles of waymarked paths. The Lady's Walk is the classic introduction: a 3.6km circuit from the free car park by Eglwys Newydd, the estate church, that drops through the woods to the River Ystwyth and returns through open parkland and wooded side valleys. It is graded moderate, with a climb back up from the river on paths that get muddy after rain. For more, the steeper 6km Gentleman's Walk starts at the Alpine Bridge, about a mile from the car park.
This is a genuinely dog friendly estate, and the published guidance is that dogs can be off lead under control on the woodland walks, but must be on a lead around livestock and in the gardens. Sheep graze the open parkland, so expect to clip the lead on and off. The Ystwyth and its side streams give plenty of drinking water, and the woods are shady in summer. Paths are uneven in places with drops to the river, so watch young dogs near the gorge. There is a temporary toilet by the church, and the nearest food is in Pontrhydygroes.

Is Hafod Estate Lady's Walk dog friendly?
Hafod Estate is genuinely dog friendly, earning a solid 8/10 rating. Dogs are welcome on the woodland walks, with the River Ystwyth and its side streams providing plenty of natural drinking water along the way, and the tree canopy offering good shade in summer.
Can dogs be off lead at Hafod Estate Lady's Walk?
Yes — the estate's own guidance allows dogs off lead under control on the woodland sections of the walk. That said, sheep graze the open parkland, so you'll need to have a lead handy and clip it on when you pass through grazing areas or near any gardens.
What should I know before visiting Hafod Estate Lady's Walk with my dog?
The Lady's Walk is a 3.6km moderate circuit with some muddy stretches after rain and a climb back up from the River Ystwyth, so good footwear is worth wearing. The paths are uneven in places with drops near the gorge, so it's worth keeping a close eye on younger or more excitable dogs near the river edge. There's a temporary toilet by the church car park, but no café on site — the nearest food and drink is in Pontrhydygroes, about a mile away.
