Garwnant Forest and Llwyn-on Reservoir Circular

Merthyr Tydfil

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A forest and reservoir circuit where dogs run free through 400 acres of Welsh woodland above Llwyn-on Reservoir, with a dog friendly cafe to finish.

Garwnant Visitor Centre sits five miles north of Merthyr Tydfil in the heart of Fforest Fawr, on the northern shore of Llwyn-on Reservoir within Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons National Park). The centre manages around 400 acres of conifer and broadleaf woodland, much of it good for dogs off lead, with waymarked trails ranging from a short all-ability route to this longer circuit of about 8.7km, which climbs through the forest onto the open moorland fringe above the reservoir before descending back through the trees. The 250 metres of ascent is spread gradually across forest roads and woodland paths rather than any single steep pull, and the highest sections give views over the reservoir to the surrounding hills of the national park.

This is a dog friendly forest with high off-lead potential on the quieter woodland paths away from the main forest roads, and Llwyn-on Reservoir itself, though not for swimming as a drinking water supply, gives a scenic backdrop for a paddle-free walk. Livestock is generally limited to occasional sheep near the moorland fringe rather than throughout the route. The mixed woodland offers shade and rich scent for a dog on a warm day, and the visitor centre cafe is dog friendly with a fire, outdoor seating and water put out for dogs. Parking, toilets and picnic areas are all at the visitor centre, making this an easy base for a longer forest walk.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Garwnant Forest and Llwyn-on Reservoir Circular dog friendly?

Garwnant Forest scores a solid 8/10 for dog friendliness, and it earns it. The forest itself welcomes dogs, the visitor centre cafe is dog friendly with outdoor seating and water put out for dogs, and the whole setup — parking, picnic areas, and toilets all at the visitor centre — makes it an easy and relaxed day out with your dog.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Garwnant Forest and Llwyn-on Reservoir Circular?

Off-lead potential is high here, particularly on the quieter woodland paths away from the main forest roads, where dogs can roam through 400 acres of mixed conifer and broadleaf woodland. Livestock is generally limited to occasional sheep near the moorland fringe at the top of the route, so it's worth keeping leads to hand for that section, but much of the walk is good open running for a dog.

  • What should I know before visiting Garwnant Forest and Llwyn-on Reservoir Circular with my dog?

The circuit is around 8.7km with 250 metres of ascent spread gradually across forest roads and woodland paths, so it's a decent outing rather than a gentle stroll — good to bear in mind for older or less fit dogs. Llwyn-on Reservoir is a drinking water supply, so swimming isn't an option, but the woodland itself offers plenty of shade and interest on warmer days. Watch for occasional sheep near the moorland fringe towards the top of the route.
