Gedling Country Park Colliery Circular
Nottinghamshire
Gedling Country Park covers 580 acres on the eastern edge of Nottingham, created since 2000 by reclaiming the spoil heap of Gedling Colliery, which closed in 1991, and now gives dogs with reliable recall some of the widest off-lead grassland near the city. Gedling Borough Council opened it as a country park in 2015, and the old tip is now grassland, young woodland and wildlife habitat with a lake, a visitor centre and four colour coded trails of different lengths. This circuit of about 4.7km from the Spring Lane car park climbs onto the top paths of the former heap, where the views stretch across the city and the Trent valley, then loops back down through the trees and grassland. The ups and downs add up to something like 150 metres of climbing, on a mix of surfaced trails and grassy paths that can be muddy in winter.
This is a dog friendly park with no livestock and plenty of open grass where a dog with reliable recall can run once you are away from the car park and visitor centre. Keep dogs on a lead near the centre, the play area and the lake, where water birds nest. There is some shade in the young woodland, but the top paths are exposed on hot days, so carry water. Café 1899 at the visitor centre has outdoor seating and runs a Christmas event for dogs, and the car park is pay and display.
