Gorran Haven to Dodman Point Circular
Cornwall
Dodman Point is the highest headland on the south Cornish coast, a great bulk of land between Mevagissey Bay and Veryan Bay that old charts marked as the Deadman's Point, and dogs can swim at Gorran Haven, Vault Beach and Hemmick Beach along the way, since all three allow dogs year round. A large stone cross stands on its tip as a warning to sailors about the dangerous lee shores below, and an Iron Age promontory fort cuts across its neck. This 7.9km circular walk starts in the fishing village of Gorran Haven and follows the South West Coast Path south above Vault Beach, where wreckage from ships lost on the Dodman used to wash ashore, out to the cross on the point, then round to the remote, sandy Hemmick Beach before returning inland over fields to Gorran Haven. It is graded moderate, with around 250 metres of climbing on grassy coast path and field edges, and the views stretch along much of the south coast.
This is a dog friendly walk with a rare bonus: Gorran Haven, Vault Beach and Hemmick Beach all allow dogs all year, so your dog can swim at the start, middle and end. The only stile is a V-shaped squeeze stile that most dogs manage easily. The paths near the point run close to unfenced cliff edges, so keep your dog close there, and put it on a lead crossing farmland on the return in case of livestock. There is little shade, so carry water. Gorran Haven has a cafe and parking.

Is Gorran Haven to Dodman Point Circular dog friendly?
This is a genuinely dog-friendly walk, rated 8/10, and one of its real highlights is that all three beaches along the route — Gorran Haven, Vault Beach and Hemmick Beach — allow dogs all year round. That means your dog can swim at the start, middle and end of the 7.9km circular route, which is a rarer treat than you might think on the South West Coast Path.
Can dogs be off lead at Gorran Haven to Dodman Point Circular?
There's good off-lead potential on much of this walk, but two sections call for caution. The paths near Dodman Point run close to unfenced cliff edges, so keep your dog close there, and leads are recommended when crossing farmland on the return leg in case of livestock.
What should I know before visiting Gorran Haven to Dodman Point Circular with my dog?
The walk is graded moderate with around 250 metres of climbing, so it's worth making sure your dog is comfortable with that kind of terrain. There's little shade on the route, so bring plenty of water for both of you. The only stile is a V-shaped squeeze stile that most dogs manage without difficulty, and Gorran Haven at the start has a cafe, shop and pub, as well as a pay and display car park at the top of the village.
