Hankley Common Heathland Walk

Surrey

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A big, open heathland walk on 560 hectares of MOD-managed common near Elstead, with wide views, unusual filming-location history and a replica Atlantic Wall.

Dog friendly across most of its paths, Hankley Common is a huge, airy stretch of lowland heath west of Elstead, famed for its film appearances (the Casino Royale helicopter duel was shot here) and for the striking concrete Atlantic Wall replica still standing on the western edge. The main loop traces sandy tracks through silver birch and heather, with long views across the Thursley commons in clear weather.

Dogs should be on lead throughout because the land is used for MOD training and wildlife sensitivity is high; owners also need to be aware that occasional firing and flash-bang noise from training can unsettle nervous dogs. Paths are sandy and well-drained underfoot, making this a good all-weather choice. Parking is free at the large sandy car park off the A3 exit (postcode GU8 6LW), which takes around 20 cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hankley Common Heathland Walk dog friendly?

Hankley Common scores a solid 7/10 for dog friendliness and welcomes dogs across most of its paths. The sandy, well-drained tracks make it a comfortable walk whatever the weather, and the wide open heathland gives a real sense of space — it's a great destination for dogs who love to explore big, airy landscapes.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Hankley Common Heathland Walk?

Dogs should be kept on lead throughout Hankley Common. The land is MOD-managed and used for active military training, and the heathland habitat is also home to sensitive wildlife, so leads are required for both safety and conservation reasons.

  • What should I know before visiting Hankley Common Heathland Walk with my dog?

The most important thing to be aware of is that MOD training exercises take place on the common, which can include firing and flash-bang noise — if your dog is easily unsettled by loud sounds, it's worth bearing this in mind before you visit. There are no facilities on the common itself, but The Duke of Cambridge pub nearby offers a full menu and a large car park, making it a handy stop before or after your walk. Parking at the common's own sandy car park is free (GU8 6LW) and fits around 20 cars.
