Hughenden Park and Manor Woods Circular
Buckinghamshire
Hughenden Manor was the country home of the Victorian prime minister Benjamin Disraeli, and the National Trust now manages the wider estate around it, a mix of beech hangers, farmland and parkland in the Chiltern Hills above High Wycombe. This 8.6km circular walk, the longest of several waymarked routes here, follows the estate boundary through Hughenden's woods and open fields, where dogs go on a lead near the grazing cattle and sheep, taking in a monument with far-reaching views across the valley and passing the site's wartime history as a secret map-making base for Bomber Command. The climbing is spread out across the route rather than concentrated in one section, with around 180 metres of ascent on well-used estate paths and tracks.
This is a dog friendly estate with high off-lead potential in the woodland and open parkland, where paths are wide and mostly quiet. Cattle and sheep graze parts of the farmland on the boundary walk, so dogs go back on the lead in those fields, and deer are present in the woods, calling for a reliable recall away from livestock areas. The beech woodland gives good shade and the estate's ponds and streams give a dog somewhere to drink, though there is no large body of water for swimming. Parking is at the main Hughenden Manor car park, with a shop and cafe on site, and dogs are welcome in the wider grounds even where they cannot enter the house itself.
