King's Wood Circular from Challock
Kent
King's Wood is a 588 hectare Forestry England woodland on the Kent Downs above the Stour valley near Challock, once a royal hunting ground and now a mix of conifer plantation, sweet chestnut coppice and old beech groves where dogs are free to roam off lead. Between 1999 and 2008 it hosted a sculpture trail of works made from natural materials and designed to decay back into the forest; a few remnants survive. This 6.4km circuit from the White Hill car park follows red waymarkers: the first mile is level, the second runs gently downhill, and the middle section has the one proper climb, with about 105 metres of ascent in all. Paths are woodland tracks and forest rides, muddy in winter, with roots and flints underfoot. Bluebells carpet the woods from late March into May.
This is a dog friendly walk with plenty of off-lead potential, as there is no grazing livestock and the rides are wide enough to see what is coming. The one thing to watch is the large herd of fallow deer, so a dog that chases needs a lead or a reliable recall. Horses and cyclists share the bridleways. The tree cover gives good shade in summer, but there is no stream on the route, so carry water. There is no cafe at the forest, and the dog friendly Flying Horse pub is a short drive away at Boughton Aluph.

Is King's Wood Circular from Challock dog friendly?
Yes, it scores 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness. King's Wood is a large Forestry England woodland with no livestock, wide rides and plenty of shade, and it is one of the most popular dog walks near Ashford. The caveats are the fallow deer herd, which can tempt chasers, and the lack of water to drink or paddle on the route.
Can dogs be off lead at King's Wood Circular from Challock?
Yes, for most of the walk if your dog has good recall. There are no sheep or cattle in the forest, and the waymarked paths and rides are broad. Keep a lead handy for the fallow deer, which are common, and for horse riders and cyclists on the bridleways. Watch for forestry vehicles where coppicing is taking place.
What should I know before visiting King's Wood Circular from Challock with my dog?
The paths get very muddy in winter, with roots and flints, so wear boots. There is no cafe, toilet or water at the car park, so bring water for your dog. Parking is free at the time of writing, but Forestry England is introducing charges from October 2026. Coppicing work with chainsaws can be under way on Mondays and Tuesdays, so follow any diversion signs.
