Faversham Stone Chapel (Our Lady of Elverton)

The only church in England built into a Roman pagan mausoleum, a small ruin in a field, quiet and rarely visited with your dog.
There is one fact here that makes the detour worthwhile: this is the only Christian building in England that incorporates the standing remains of a 4th century Romano-British pagan mausoleum within its fabric. The small Anglo-Saxon and medieval chapel of Stone-next-Faversham was built directly onto the Roman structure, and you can still pick out the Roman masonry in the walls.
Whilst you find the join between Roman and medieval work, your dog gets a quiet, rarely visited field site a little off the A2, so treat it as a short stop rather than a walk. The North Downs Way and the Faversham creek paths are both within easy reach if you want to make a day of it.
Free and open at any reasonable time. There are no posted dog rules here. It sits in agricultural land, so keep your dog on a lead, watch for livestock and close any gates. There are no facilities and parking is limited roadside space. Finds from the nearby Roman cemetery at Ospringe are on display at Maison Dieu.
