Morden Hall Park and the River Wandle
London
Morden Hall Park is a 125 acre National Trust estate on the banks of the River Wandle in south London, its towpaths good for a dog on a lead by the faster sections of water. Morden Hall was built in the 1770s, and the tobacco merchant Gilliat Hatfeild bought the estate in the 1870s, grinding snuff in the watermills that still stand by the river. His son left the core of the estate to the National Trust in 1941 on condition that no entry fee was charged. This loop of around 4km from the car park by the garden centre follows the Wandle and its side channels past the snuff mills and the moat around the hall, crosses the rose garden and heads out over the wetland on wooden boardwalks with reed beds and viewing platforms before returning across the meadows. It is flat throughout, on gravel paths, tarmac and boardwalk.
This is a dog friendly walk for a short, level outing, and the park has a dog friendly cafe. There is space on the open meadows for a dog with good recall to stretch out, but the park is busy with families, cyclists and other dogs, so keep your dog close on the paths and on a lead in the rose garden and on the boardwalks, where wildlife is sensitive. The Wandle is shallow in places but fast in others, so watch your dog near the water. There are no livestock and plenty of shade from the old trees.
