Samphire Hoe Country Park Circular

Kent

Dog Friendly Rating:6/10A flat, stile-free loop that suits any dog, young or old, around the Channel Tunnel spoil turned nature reserve beneath the White Cliffs.

Samphire Hoe is 30 hectares of new land at the foot of the White Cliffs between Dover and Folkestone, built from 4.9 million cubic metres of chalk marl dug out during the Channel Tunnel excavations and opened to the public in 1997. It is now a nature reserve run by Eurotunnel, with dogs kept on a lead at all times around the grazing sheep and cattle. The Kent Downs stile-free trail is a 3.2km circuit on tarmac paths through the wildflower meadows and back along a smooth concrete sea wall, with Shakespeare Cliff rising to the east and early spider orchids in spring. The average gradient is 1 in 15, with only short steeper ramps up to the middle terrace of the sea wall, so it suits pushchairs, wheelchairs and older legs.

This is a dog friendly walk, but a strictly on-lead one: Samphire Hoe asks for dogs to be kept on a lead at all times and for every poo to be picked up. Sheep and small herds of Highland or Shetland cattle graze fenced enclosures on the Hoe at certain times of year, and skylarks and meadow pipits nest on the grassland, so the rule makes sense. There is no natural water for a dog to drink and almost no shade, so carry water on warm days. The sea wall closes in storms when waves overtop it. The pay and display car park sits beside toilets and a tea kiosk that opens at weekends and most days in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Samphire Hoe Country Park Circular dog friendly?

Samphire Hoe welcomes dogs on its 3.2km circular trail beneath the White Cliffs, though it earns a 6/10 on our dog-friendly rating due to its strict on-lead policy. The route itself is a real treat — a flat, stile-free tarmac and concrete path through wildflower meadows with impressive views of Shakespeare Cliff and the sea.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Samphire Hoe Country Park Circular?

No — dogs must be kept on a lead at all times throughout the site, no exceptions. This is largely down to the grazing sheep and Highland or Shetland cattle in fenced enclosures across the Hoe, as well as ground-nesting skylarks and meadow pipits on the grassland.

  • What should I know before visiting Samphire Hoe Country Park Circular with my dog?

There's no natural water source on the route and very little shade, so bring plenty of water for your dog on warmer days. It's also worth knowing that the sea wall section can close during storms when waves overtop it, so check conditions before you go. The pay and display car park is accessed through a height-limited tunnel (4.8m), with toilets and a tea kiosk nearby that opens at weekends year-round and most days from Easter to September.
