Folkestone Warren and East Cliff Circular
Kent
East Cliff and Warren Country Park covers 121 hectares on the eastern edge of Folkestone, run by Folkestone Town Council, with plenty of open ground for dogs off lead. The western end is open lawn on the clifftop, watched over by three Martello towers built between 1804 and 1809 against a Napoleonic invasion. Beyond them lies the Warren, a jumbled undercliff created by two centuries of landslips; the largest, in December 1915, moved around 1.5 million cubic metres of chalk and buried the railway line, which did not reopen until 1919. The Warren is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its geology and wildlife, and a well known fossil hunting spot. This 6km circuit from Wear Bay Road drops by a zig-zag path and steps into fern-filled woodland, runs along the sea wall and the sandy East Wear Bay, and climbs back to the cliffs, with around 90 metres of climbing.
This is a very dog friendly walk. The Warren beach is one of the few in the district where dogs are welcome all year, unlike Sunny Sands with its summer ban, so a dog can swim and dig at low tide in any month. There is no grazing livestock, and the woodland paths give real off-lead freedom and summer shade. Watch the cliff edges on top, keep dogs close near the railway footbridge, and expect muddy, slippery steps after rain. There are dog bins on the paths and a cafe by the car park.

All dog friendly stays in KentFrequently Asked Questions
Is Folkestone Warren and East Cliff Circular dog friendly?
This is a genuinely dog-friendly walk, rated 8 out of 10. One of its standout features is that dogs are welcome on Warren beach all year round — unlike nearby Sunny Sands, which has a summer ban — so your dog can swim and dig at low tide in any season. There are dog bins along the paths and a cafe near the car park, making it a comfortable outing for both of you.
Can dogs be off lead at Folkestone Warren and East Cliff Circular?
There is plenty of off-lead opportunity here — the 121-hectare park has open clifftop ground and woodland paths through the Warren where dogs can roam freely, and there is no grazing livestock to worry about. That said, it's worth keeping your dog close near the cliff edges at the top and around the railway footbridge, where caution is sensible.
What should I know before visiting Folkestone Warren and East Cliff Circular with my dog?
The 6km circuit involves a zig-zag descent on steps into the Warren, and these can get muddy and slippery after rain, so decent footwear is a good idea. Facilities are largely concentrated at the Wear Bay Road end — there's a cafe and toilets near the car park — but once you're down in the Warren itself, there's nothing, so it's worth coming prepared. Parking is available on Wear Bay Road near the Martello towers, though charges haven't been confirmed, so bring some change just in case.
