Sandringham Country Park Woodland Walk
Norfolk
Sandringham Country Park covers nearly 243 hectares of the wider royal estate in west Norfolk, a working landscape of pine plantation, mature broadleaf woodland and open parkland laid out for the royal family from the 1860s onwards, with a dog kept on a lead throughout since livestock grazes parts of the estate. The main waymarked route from the visitor centre is a yellow trail of around 4.5km, taking in the Norwich Gates avenue, the church of St Mary Magdalene and the conifer plantations that shelter deer and red squirrels, with shorter loops of 1.5 and 2.5 miles for a quicker visit. The paths are flat to gently undulating, well maintained gravel and compacted earth that can turn muddy in the woods after rain, and the whole park is free to enter and open every day of the year.
This is a dog friendly walk, and dogs on leads are welcome throughout the country park's waymarked trails and woodland, though not in the formal Gardens, the House or the Museum. Livestock grazes parts of the wider estate, so the park asks dogs to be kept under close control and to footpaths, with short leads near the Courtyard cafe and shop and the children's play area where visitors are busiest. The mature woodland gives good shade for a dog in summer, and there are dog waste bins at intervals around the trails. The Sandringham Shop, Terrace Cafe and parts of the Sandringham Restaurant in the Courtyard all welcome dogs, and the visitor centre car park is pay and display.
