Sennen Cove to Land's End Circular
Cornwall
Sennen Cove sits at the northern end of Whitesand Bay, and the headland to its south runs out to Land's End, the most westerly point of mainland England. This 5km circular walk suits most dogs on a lead, since the cliffs are unfenced, and it leaves the harbour car park beside the lifeboat station to climb onto Mayon Cliff, then follows the South West Coast Path past Maen Castle, an Iron Age cliff castle with a stone rampart, ditch and bank built across the neck of the headland. The path continues over granite cliffs to Dr Syntax's Head and Land's End before turning inland over Trevescan Cliff and returning through countryside to the cove. There is one sustained climb from Sennen up to Mayon Cliff and around 100 metres of ascent in total, on good but rocky clifftop paths.
This dog friendly walk is short enough for most dogs and full of seabirds, heather and sea air to keep noses busy, but the cliffs are steep and unfenced, so a lead is the safer choice along the coast. Land's End itself is busy with visitors and buildings, another reason to keep your dog close. The inland return passes working farmland, where dogs should be under close control. There is no shade and no fresh water on the route. Sennen beach has seasonal dog restrictions in summer, so check the signs before a post-walk run on the sand. Sennen Cove has a beach cafe and a pub.
