Slindon Estate: Nore Hill Folly Walk

West Sussex

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A National Trust woodland climb gives dogs room to roam from Eartham village to Nore Hill Folly, past spring bluebells and storm-regenerated beech to coastal views.

The Slindon Estate is 1,400 hectares of downland, farmland, parkland and ancient woodland north of Arundel, cared for by the National Trust and crossed by more than 25 miles of footpaths and bridleways. This 6.1km circular walk, with wide woodland tracks for dogs to range off lead, starts at The George Inn in the hilltop village of Eartham and climbs gradually, around a mile of ascent in total, through Puck Lane's ancient beech woodland, regenerating naturally since the Great Storm of 1987, to Nore Hill Folly, a modest monument with a bench and sweeping views south across the coastal plain to the sea. The return leg drops back through more woodland and along drovers' lanes overhung with trees, with bluebells beneath the beeches from mid-April followed later by early purple orchids.

This dog friendly walk gives a good mix of shaded woodland, where a dog with reliable recall can be let off lead, and open farmland, where the National Trust asks for close control because livestock graze the surrounding fields. The bridleways and forestry tracks are wide and easy for a dog to cover ground on, and the beech woods keep things cool in summer. There are no dog waste bins on the route, so bring bags to take any mess home with you. The George Inn at the start and finish is a good spot for a dog to rest afterwards, and the walk otherwise has no facilities, so carry water for a warm day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Slindon Estate: Nore Hill Folly Walk dog friendly?

Yes, this is a well-suited walk for dogs, earning a 7/10 dog friendly rating. The wide woodland tracks and bridleways give dogs plenty of room to move, and The George Inn in Eartham village — where the walk starts and finishes — welcomes dogs too. The main thing to be aware of is that livestock graze the surrounding farmland, so the National Trust asks for close control in those open areas.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Slindon Estate: Nore Hill Folly Walk?

Dogs with reliable recall can be let off lead through the woodland sections, where the wide beech tracks give them good room to range. On the open farmland sections, however, the National Trust asks you to keep dogs under close control due to grazing livestock nearby. It's a good mix of freedom and managed areas, so a dog that responds well to recall will get the most out of the route.

  • What should I know before visiting Slindon Estate: Nore Hill Folly Walk with my dog?

There are no dog waste bins on this 6.1km circular walk, so bring bags and be prepared to take any mess home with you. There are also no water points on the route itself, so carry water for your dog, especially on warmer days. The walk involves around a mile of gradual ascent in total, and the shaded beech woodland helps keep things cool in summer — worth bearing in mind if your dog feels the heat.
